Lowana Residents

A Lesson in Light, Space, and Connection

A Home That Needed to Work Harder

With five children and a busy household, the owners of Lowana Residents needed more than just extra space—they needed a home that could flex with family life, balance privacy with connection, and bring light and calm into every corner. The solution lay not in building up, but in working smarter with what they had—reconfiguring the existing layout and extending at ground level to create a home that now feels both expansive and deeply considered.

At the heart of the transformation is a new north-facing pavilion-style living area, oriented to capture northern sun and link directly to the new lawn and pool areas. This light-filled space has become the family’s central gathering point. Its connection to the outdoors is effortless, offering both visual and physical flow that supports entertaining, supervision, and everyday living.

The design strategy focused first on unlocking the potential of the existing footprint. The former kitchen and one of the two oversized living areas flanking the front door was reimagined as two new bedrooms, a home office, and a powder room. This allowed the original front living room to remain—now nestled among the children’s bedrooms.

Clarity, Comfort, and Connection

The new layout introduces acoustic separation and spatial clarity. A door between the original house and the extension allows for privacy and improved thermal performance, while a sightline from the backyard to the front door offers subtle connection across the home. The kitchen, positioned at the threshold between old and new, acts as a social anchor—linking private and public zones with ease. And a walk-in pantry off the new kitchen doubles as a private family entrance, complete with a mud area for bags and shoes, keeping the main entry clear and calm.

Externally, the entire home received a fresh, modern colour scheme, transforming its presence in the streetscape. What was once a dated exterior now sits confidently among its neighbours, reflecting the thoughtful transformation within.

Smart Decisions, Big Impact

This project is a testament to what’s possible on a tight budget. By prioritising reconfiguration before expansion and investing in thermal performance through double glazing and best-practice construction, the result is a home that feels generous, efficient, and emotionally intelligent. Each child now has their own bedroom, the two living areas allow for both connection and retreat, and the family enjoys a stronger connection to the outdoors.

Lowana Residents is a clear reflection of our ethos: make the most of what you have, build only where it matters, and design for the way people actually live.
